DREAMS
Dreams offer a fascinating window into the inner workings of the mind. They can bring together memories, emotions, fears, desires, and experiences in ways that feel mysterious, symbolic, or intensely real. Sometimes a dream seems to reveal something about us that we haven't consciously recognized.
But what is actually happening when we dream, and how much can dreams tell us about our subconscious mind?
The term subconscious is commonly used to describe mental processes that operate outside our immediate awareness. Psychologists often use the broader term unconscious processing.
These processes can include:
Hidden emotions: Feelings we haven't fully acknowledged or understood.
Memories: Experiences that influence us even when we're not actively thinking about them.
Beliefs and expectations: Assumptions that shape how we respond to people and situations.
Unresolved concerns: Problems, conflicts, or uncertainties that continue to occupy our minds.
Automatic reactions: Habits and emotional responses that happen without deliberate thought.
Sigmund Freud — Hidden wishes and conflicts
Freud proposed that dreams could express wishes, impulses, and conflicts that the conscious mind finds difficult to acknowledge. His theory helped popularize dream interpretation, although many of its specific claims remain disputed.
Carl Jung — Symbols and personal growth
Jung viewed dreams as potentially expressing neglected aspects of the personality and helping a person develop greater psychological balance. He also proposed a collective unconscious containing shared archetypal patterns, a concept that is influential in some traditions but not established as a scientific fact.
I personally prefer Carl Jung’s theories over Sigmund Freud’s in any discussion. I would like to believe that the concept of symbols has been embedded in our human psyche. I would also like to believe that it is part of a collective consciousness that we all share together. When we sleep our dreams take us to another reality. Could that be our true connection to the universe and to each other?
Unfortunately scientists do not have a single, proven answer for the question of why we dream and obviously neither do I.
Goodnight, sweet dreams
